New ways of funding environmental
enterprises to be examined

The Yale School of Forestry's Industrial Environmental Program (IEM) will host a symposium on Friday, March 23, that will examine new models for environmental funding.

Venture philanthropy, for-profit subsidiaries of nonprofit organizations and a venture capital fund run by a nonprofit enterprise are among the new models that will be discussed at the event, which will be held 3-5 p.m. in Bowers Auditorium of Sage Hall, 205 Prospect St.

"We're going to look at some of the innovative ways that organizations are finding to support their own and others' efforts to improve the environment," says Marian Chertow, director of the IEM program. One new model that will be discussed, for example, is a $10 million venture fund started by the Nature Conservancy that offers venture capital to environmentally and socially responsible businesses in Latin American and the Caribbean.

The symposium will include a panel discussion followed by an hour-long reception beginning at 5 p.m., when participants can engage in further discussion and networking with practitioners in the field. The event is free and open to the public.

"Venture Philanthropy and Other New Models in Funding Environmental Enterprises" is supported by the Joel Omura Kurihara Fund. The fund was established in memory of Joel Kurihara, who was a member of the School of Forestry's Class of 1992, to support programs that improve business and environmental relations.
