to benefit local AIDS organization
Dancers from Yale and the local community will show their support for those living with AIDS in the New Haven area by joining together in a benefit performance.
The event, called "Stand Up and Dance," will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Off Broadway Theater on York St., behind Toad's Place. It will feature performances by all of Yale's undergraduate dance companies and such New Haven performers as students from the Educational Center for the Arts. The performance will benefit AIDS Interfaith Network, a New Haven organization that offers various support services including crisis intervention, medical screenings, employment assistance, HIV education, counseling and legal assistance.

"Stand Up and Dance" was founded in 1997 by Neil Mitra and Marc Jacobson, two Yale students who sought to tap into the University's performance talent in order to unite the campus and the New Haven community. This is the fifth year that Yale dancers and other dancers have joined in a performance for a local charity. Since last year, the event has raised money for AIDS Interfaith.
"Stand Up and Dance" is sponsored by the Alliance for Dance at Yale College (ADAY), founded in 1998 by Sidra Bell '01 and Elana Aquino '00. The group's goals are to foster ties between the Yale and New Haven communities through dance, to increase the presence of dance on the Yale campus and to provide a common voice representing dancers at Yale. ADAY also sponsors dance symposiums which brings together Yale students, New Haven students and city residents during a day of workshops and performances.
