Laura Wexler, associate professor of women's and gender studies and of American studies, received the American Historical Association's Joan Kelly Memorial Prize for her book "Tender Violence: Domestic Visions in an Age of U.S. Imperialism" (University of North Carolina Press, 2000).
The annual prize is awarded to the best work in women's history and/or feminist theory in recognition of the life and work of Joan Kelly (19281982).
In "Tender Violence," Wexler examines the works of early women photographers as text that demonstrates the ways domestic rhetoric and imagery furthered U.S. imperial ventures.
