Yale athletes from the men's and women's golf teams and from the men's tennis team are on their way to compete in NCAA championships.

Men's Golf Team

The Yale men's golf team has been selected to participate in the 2002 NCAA East Regional Championship May 16-18 at the Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek in Roswell, Georgia. It is the sixth time in the last seven years that Yale has made the NCAA Regionals.

The top 10 teams and the top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, May 29-June 1.

Yale, which has won 21 NCAA golf championships, finished second at the Ivy League Championships and fourth at the New England Championships. The Bulldogs also won the George Washington Invitational and the Yale Spring Opener.

The five players expected to compete for Yale are seniors Chris Eckerle (Indianapolis, IN) and Adam Cyrus (Huntington, WV), sophomores Neel Williams (Monroe, LA) and Alex Fulton (Kingwood, TX) and freshman Steve Gray (Lee's Summit, MO).

Women's Golf Team

The women's golf team will participate in the 2002 NCAA East Regional Championship May 9-11 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Bulldogs earned the Ivy League's automatic bid by winning the Ivy title on April 20-21. It is the first time that the Yale team has qualified for the NCAA Championship.

Altogether 21 teams and three individuals were announced by the NCAA selection committee for the 54-hole event, in which eight teams and two individuals who are not on those eight teams will advance to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, at the end of May.

The Bulldogs are seeded 20th in the East Regional. Joining them in the field are (in order of ranking): Auburn, Duke, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Furman, North Carolina, Louisiana State, Tulane, Mississippi State, Memphis, Texas A&M, Central Florida, Alabama, South Florida, North Carolina State and Jackson State.

The Yale women's golf team, which has won four of the six Ivy League titles, enjoyed a successful season under second-year head coach Mary Moan. At the Ivy League Championship, the Bulldogs had five of the top 15 finishers. Senior Sarah Seo (Lima, OH) and freshman Stephanie Wei (Bellevue, WA) tied for second, senior Jennifer Schriefer (Fort Wayne, IN) tied for fifth, freshman Anna Jepson (Hasselby, Sweden) was ninth and junior Jordanna Davis (Syosset, NY) was 15th. During the fall season, the Bulldogs won the Yale and Princeton Invitationals and tied for fifth at the ECAC Championship.

Men's Tennis Players

All-American Steve Berke (North Miami, FL) and Dustin West (Lynchburg, VA) of the Yale men's tennis team are heading for the NCAA Tennis Championships, to be held May 18-27 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Berke will compete in the singles contest and join with West for the doubles matches.

The men's tennis team won 10 of its first 13 matches this spring, including a 4-3 decision at high-ranked San Diego State on March 21. With Berke leading the lineup, hopes were high as head coach Alex Dorato's Bulldogs headed for the Ivy League campaign.

However, a leg injury forced Berke to miss all seven league contests, and victory eluded the Bulldogs (14-11 overall, 0-7 Ivy). There were four one-point losses in Ancient Eight play, including three in a row.

It is believed that Berke, who did not lose a league match last year on his way to becoming the first unranked player to make the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, could have meant at least an added two points per contest.

Fortunately for Berke and the Elis, the NCAA bases its singles and doubles tennis championship selections on rankings during the academic year, so missing the seven Ivy matches did not knock him out of the running. He was 10-1 at the No. 1 singles spot and was 59th in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, making him the highest nationally ranked player from the Northeast Region. In addition, Berke won 10 of 11 doubles matches between three partners.

West, who along with Berke formed Yale's No. 1 doubles unit, will make his first appearance at the NCAAs. West and Berke went 7-1 at the No. 1 doubles spot and are ranked 29th nationally, the highest national ranking from the Northeast Region. Last year Berke and West were the top-ranked team in the Northeast.

Dorato, the 2001 Wilson/ITA Region I Coach of the Year, has taken his top player to the NCAA singles tournament seven times in his 10 years at Yale, but this is his first doubles team to be selected.
