Homebuyer Program is extended
with a special incentive

President Richard C. Levin has extended the Yale University Homebuyer program for another two years, until Dec. 31, 2003.

The program, which has already helped nearly 500 employees purchase a home in New Haven since it began in 1994, is available to any Yale employee who is either a faculty member with an appointment of at least one year at 50% or more of full-time, or a permanent staff employee of the University scheduled to work 20 hours or more per week. If there is more than one Yale employee in the household, only one benefit is awarded.

There is a special incentive for home purchases on designated streets in the Dixwell neighborhood until Dec. 31, 2002. In addition to the $25,000 regular homebuyer benefit payment -- consisting of an initial payment of $7,000 and nine annual payments of $2,000 -- employees who purchase a home on the designated streets in Dixwell will receive a $5,000 bonus payment. This will increase the initial payment to $12,000 (which will net approximately $7,200 after taxes are withheld) and bring the total amount of benefits received to $30,000 over 10 years.

To be eligible for this additional benefit, employees must purchase homes on the following streets in the Dixwell neighborhood: Admiral Street; Hillside Place; Tilton Street; Bristol Street; Mansfield Street (up to 222); Winchester Avenue (up to 235); Compton Street; Munson Street (up to 283); Woodland Street; Henry Street (up to 101); and Sachem Street.

The Dixwell neighborhood offers close proximity to Yale University. The neighborhood's Stetson Library is home of the "Technology Access Center," which has been hailed as one of the best computer centers in any public library in the New Haven area. There is currently construction underway at Wexler School to create a running/walking track around a multi-purpose recreational field and a playground.

The area also includes the Monterey Place development of homes, and there are plans for a new Yale police station, featuring a community room, at the former American Linen site on Lock Street.
