Linda Peterson, the newly appointed Niel Gray Jr. Professor of English, teaches Victorian poetry and prose and also has an interest in autobiography, the essay and natural history writing.

She has authored two books, "Traditions of Victorian Women's Autobiography: The Poetics and Politics of Life Writing" (published in 1999 and reissued in paperback last year) and "Victorian Autobiography: The Tradition of Self-Interpretation." She is coauthor of "A Struggle for Fame: Victorian Woman Artists and Authors," a publication of the Yale Center for British Art, and of "Writing Prose." She is the general editor of "The Norton Reader," an anthology of classic and contemporary essays used widely in writing courses across North America, and she edited "Wuthering Heights: A Case Study in Contemporary Criticism." In addition, Peterson has written numerous articles and book chapters on 19th-century poetry.

Her current projects include a book titled "Becoming an Author: The Shape of Professional Lives in 19th-Century Britain" and an editorial project that re-introduces out-of-print 19th-century women's and working-class autobiographies.

Peterson earned her B.A. from Wheaton College, an M.A. from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. from Brown University. She joined the Yale faculty as a lecturer in 1977 and became an assistant professor a year later. She was named a full professor in 1992.

The Yale English professor has served almost continuously since 1979 as co-director of the Bass Writing Program in Yale College. She frequently teaches "Daily Themes," an upper-level writing course that has been part of the English department's curriculum since 1907. She chaired the department 1994-2000 and was director of undergraduate studies 1990-1994. She was named a job placement officer for the department this year. She has served on numerous departmental and University committees and recently chaired the search committee for a new director for the Yale Center for British Art.

Peterson has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences, seminars and workshops throughout the United States, and her academic honors include Morse Fellowships from Yale, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and a Mellon Fellowship.
