Future of therapeutic cloning
is focus of bioethics symposium

Dr. Robert P. Lanza, vice president and medical director of Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., will discuss "The Future of Therapeutic Cloning" in a Bioethics Project Symposium on May 16, 9:30 a.m. 3 p.m., in Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.

Along with a panel of members of the Bioethics Project Stem Cell Working Research Group, Lanza will discuss the nature and future prospects of therapeutic cloning, as well as the significance of stem cell research. For more information about the event, contact Carol Pollard at (203) 432-6188 or carol.pollard@yale.edu.

Lanza was a Fulbright Scholar and nominee for a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award. He is the author of several hundred publications, including "Principles of Tissue Engineering," "XENO: The Promise of Transplanting Animal Organs Into Humans" and, most recently, "Methods of Tissue Engineering." He edited "One World: The Health and Survival of the Human Species in the 21st Century," which included forewords and conclusions by former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, former President Jimmy Carter and former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. works to develop technologies that would, through genetic manipulation of an animal's cells, enable the use of these animals for pharmaceutical protein production. The company also works to develop cloned cells and tissues for use in cell and organ transplantation.
