The Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale will exhibit works by award-winning artist Howard Fussiner May 31-Sept. 30.
An opening reception for the exhibit, "A Love of the Land: Paintings by Howard Fussiner," will be held Friday, May 31, 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Slifka Center, 80 Wall St. The public is invited. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fussiner has curated and participated in important exhibits in Connecticut and New York City, winning praise and awards for his work. Vivian Raynor of The New York Times describes him as "a painter whose reputation goes back to the Manhattan of the 60s ... Mr. Fussiner has covered a lot of ground in his career. [His] art has grown bolder, simpler and closer to Mardsen Hartley's."
Fussiner, who now lives in New Haven, was born in New York in 1923. After serving in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946, he studied at the Cooper Union's Art Students' League, taught at Morehouse College in Atlanta and earned a master's degree from New York University in 1952. He has studied with artists Carl Nelson, Hans Hofmann, Robert Gwathmey and Hale Woodruff. From 1960 until his retirement in 1988, he was professor of art at Southern Connecticut State University and is an expert on Cezanne, Rembrandt, Corot and Saul Steinberg. He is an associate fellow of Morse College at Yale and a trustee of the David T. Langrock Foundation.
