Art gallery to showcase 'outsider art' at special fundraising event for Fellowship Place
The Yale University Art Gallery will host a special fundraising event featuring "outsider art" on Thursday, May 30.
Outsider art is created by artists with no formal training in art whose works are considered "outside" the mainstream.
Titled "Outsider In/sight," the evening will feature a reception, the unveiling of new works of art, a silent auction and a slide presentation and panel discussion on outsider art. Proceeds from the benefit event will go to Fellowship Place, a New Haven community program that provides support for people with mental illness.
The works of nine artists will be highlighted. They are Daniel Belardinelli, Karen Blair, Pedro DeClet, Joe DeMarco, Anthony Guyther, Charlie Lucas, Winfred Rembert, whose carved leather art pieces were exhibited at the Yale Art Gallery in 2000, and Fellowship Place members Ken Grimes and Steve Tarquino.
The public is invited to the Fellowship Place campus, located at 441 Elm St., the week before the benefit event to watch as Lucas, also known as the "Tin Man" from Pink Lily, Alabama, creates a new art piece out of discarded metal and other found objects. The other eight artists will also be on hand to meet with the public.
Artworks by other Fellowship Place members are currently on display on the Fellowship Place campus Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and at Flew The Coop Gallery in Westville.
The Yale University Art Gallery is located at 1111 Chapel St. The benefit will take place 5-7:30 p.m., and tickets are $60.
