Brigitte M. Peucker, the new Elias W. Leavenworth Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures, is a scholar of German lyric poetry, German literature and film studies.
Peucker has been chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures since 1997 and served nearly continuously as chair of the Film Studies Program from 1986 to 2000. She is the associate master of Ezra Stiles College.
Her books include "Incorporating Images: Film and the Rival Arts" (which was also translated into German), "Lyric Descent in the German Romantic Tradition" and "Arcadia to Elysium: Preromantic Modes in Eighteenth-Century Germany." Another work, "The Material Image," is in progress.
Peucker's numerous articles and public lectures have explored such issues as art in films by Alfred Hitchcock, the films of Werner Herzog, new German cinema, women in film and literature, and comparisons of the work of Stanley Kubrick and Franz Kafka.
A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, Peucker earned an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in German from Yale. She also attended a filmmaking program at the New York University School of Art. She joined the faculty in Yale's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures as an assistant professor in 1977 and was named the Charles B.G. Murphy Associate Professor of German in 1982. She was named a full professor in 1991.
Peucker also served as director of graduate studies in German and director of undergraduate studies in film studies. She was a faculty adviser to Yale president Howard R. Lamar 1992-1993. She served on the Executive Council of the Yale Council on International and Area Studies, headed the German instruction program of the Yale Summer Language Institute and chaired the University's Council on Priorities and Planning.
A fellow of the Whitney Humanities Center from 1994 to 1997, Peucker has received a number of grants and fellowships, including a Mellon Fellowship, a Whitney Humanities Center/Senior Faculty Fellowship, the Moore Fund Grant for Film Studies (five times), a Frederick W. Hilles Grant and an A. Whitney Griswold Grant.
Peucker is a member of The Goethe Society of North America, the Society for Cinema Studies, the Modern Language Association, the Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, the College Art Association, the German Studies Association and the American Association of Teachers of German.
