Library's debut of Voyager makes searches easier
Electronic searches for books and other materials in the Yale Library system have been made easier with the debut of a new interface to Orbis, the library's online catalog.
As part of a two-and-a-half-year project to replace the computer system that manages library operations, the library purchased Voyager, which is installed in over 900 academic and research libraries in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia. These include Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, the National Library of Medicine and the Library of Congress. The new system debuted on campus in July.
Voyager completely replaces the previous system, which was developed over a quarter century ago and had been running at Yale for almost 13 years. The older technology was expensive to maintain and difficult to enhance. The Voyager system enables a more rapid implementation of new features for readers and productivity enhancements for library staff. In addition to providing library visitors with a new online catalog, Voyager components are replacing the library's circulation, cataloging and acquisitions systems.
Noteworthy features of the new system include easier searching of prolific authors and composers; easier searching of uniform titles (e.g. "Bible" or "Arabian Nights"); options for limiting and refining searches; options for sorting search results; library account management and self-service requests for renewals, recalls and Eli Express delivery; a separate "journal titles" search; display of non-Roman characters for Chinese, Japanese and Korean records; and the ability to e-mail search results.
The library will continue to develop the Voyager system throughout 2002. Planned enhancements include simultaneous searching of Orbis, the Law Library's catalog Morris, and external library databases; support for non-Roman scripts; and the ability for readers to construct automatic searches, run at specified intervals, and to receive the results via e-mail.
The new Web-based interface is available at http://orbis.library.yale.edu.
