The 2002 winners of two prizes for junior faculty have been announced by Richard H. Brodhead, dean of Yale College.
The Poorvu Family Prize, established to recognize and enhance Yale's strength in interdisciplinary teaching, was awarded to Amy Arnsten, associate professor of neurobiology in the School of Medicine. The award recognizes Arnsten's work in designing and teaching the course "Brain and Thought: An Introduction to the Human Brain," which is offered in the Cognitive Science Program. An expert on the chemical influences on higher brain functions and their relevance to mental illness, Arnsten holds a B.A. from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego.
The Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Prize for outstanding scholarly work by a junior faculty member in the humanities has been awarded to Amy Hungerford, assistant professor of English, for her manuscript "The Holocaust of Texts: Genocide, Literature and Personification," which is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press. Hungerford joined the Yale faculty in 1999 and teaches modern and contemporary literature. She holds a B.A. and a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University.
