Robert Fischelis: First dean of Morse College

Robert Lynn Fischelis, 77, an expert on ,international affairs and the first dean of Morse College, died on June 18 in Concord, Massachusetts.

He was 77 years old.

A graduate of Harvard University and a decorated veteran of World War II, Mr. Fischelis also studied at Biarritz American University in France and became one of the first American students to study in Germany after the war when he attended the Free University of Berlin as a Harvard Fellow.

Mr. Fischelis worked for several organizations with an international scope, including the Ford Foundation's Research Project on Hungary, the Rockefeller Foundation's international fellowship program and the Educational Exchange Foundation.

Most of his career, however, was devoted to education. Over the years, he lectured at Harvard, Yale and several Russian Universities on subjects ranging from international affairs to American Indian History. During his lifetime, Mr. Fischelis mentored hundreds of students as they pursued degrees and careers.

In addition to serving as dean of Morse College, Mr. Fischelis was a member of the Yale Russian Chorus and continued his association with the group until his death, performing with other alumni members throughout the United States and Europe. He also was active with the Yale and Harvard Glee Clubs, helping to arrange performances for the singing groups in East and West Germany.

Mr. Fischelis had a strong interest in Native American culture, history and social issues and worked to promote access to higher education for Native American students. He became an adopted member of the Crow Tribe in Montana.

Mr. Fischelis, who lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Peter and Lori Fischelis of Concord, Massachusetts; his son and daughter-in-law William and Liz Fischelis of Seattle; and his daughter and son-in-law Mary (Mea) Fischelis and Doug Sanders of Seattle; and three granchildren.
