Dr. Andy Miah, a lecturer in media, bioethics and cyberculture at the University of Paisley in Scotland and International Visiting Scholar at The Hastings Center in Garrison, New York, will discuss "Enhancement Technologies and Staying Human" on Tuesday, September 4 at 4:15 p.m. at ISPS. This lecture is open to members of the Yale community only.
The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of a monthly speaker series on "Ethics, Technology and Utopian Visions," presented by the Yale Insterdisciplinary Bioethics Program and its working research group on "Artificial Intelligence, Nanotechnology and Transhumanism." The fall semester series will address implications of existing technologies such as robots, virtual reality and telemedicine. For information, reading materials and dinner reservations, contact Carol Pollard by phone at (203) 432-6188 or e-mail carol.pollard@yale.edu.
Dr. Miah will address the topic of athletes who use technology to enhance their performance. As a result of these technological advancements, he believes, sports offers an ambiguous concept of what the standard for a human is.
