Indra Nooyi, a 1980 graduate of the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) and the president and chief financial officer of PepsiCo, has joined the Yale Corporation as a successor fellow, President Richard C. Levin announced.

Nooyi is responsible for all of the corporate functions including finance strategy, human resources, law, communications and information technology for PepsiCo, which is the world's fourth largest food and beverage company.

Nooyi was born in Madras, India and graduated from Madras Christian College. She went on to receive an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta. After working in India for two years, she first came to the United States to attend Yale SOM.

After graduation, Nooyi joined the Boston Consulting Group where she spent six years directing international corporate strategy projects. She joined Motorola where she became vice president and director of corporate strategy and planning. Before joining PepsiCo in 1994, Nooyi spent four years as senior vice president of strategy and strategic marketing for Asea Brown Boreri. At PepsiCo, Nooyi has held a series of increasingly important positions, including senior vice president of corporate strategy and development; she then became chief financial officer of PepsiCo where she played an instrumental role in the company's merger with Quaker Oats Company.

At Yale, Nooyi has been a member of the President's Council on International Activities and a featured speaker at Yale's Tercentennial and Yale SOM's 25th anniversary. She also serves on the board of the International Rescue Committee and the board of trustees of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. She was a member of the board of trustees for Convent of the Sacred Heart School and serves on the advisory board of the Greenwich Breast Cancer Alliance. She is a member of the board of Motorola, as well as a director of PepsiCo.

Nooyi is the mother of two children, and she and her husband live in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Levin stated: "Indra Nooyi is one of the most impressive and influential women in the international business community. She is a devoted graduate with a keen interest in the full range of the University's activities from the sciences to the performing arts. Her experience with strategic planning in four very different global organizations will be of great value to the Corporation as we work on strengthening the University."

Nooyi said: "I am enormously honored to have been asked to join the Yale Corporation. I feel I owe so much to the education I received at Yale. As someone who grew up knowing of Yale half a world away, I treasure the opportunity to contribute to the University in the years ahead."

With Nooyi's appointment, there will be six women among the 16 fellows of the Yale Corporation.
