Campus Notes

The Harvard Yale Polo Cup will take place at the Greenwich Polo Club on Saturday, Sept 14. The goal of the day-long event is to raise funds for the Harvard and Yale polo and equestrian teams, as well as other on-campus organizations and a New York City charity. The event will consist of a polo match between alumni of Harvard and Yale, an equestrian exhibition, a luncheon, and fashion show. All members of the Yale and Harvard communities are invited. Gustav Ranis, the Henry R. Luce Director of the Center for International and Area Studies, was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Service Award at Brandeis University during its Commencement Weekend on May 26. The occasion marked the 50th reunion for Ranis, a member of Brandeis' first class.

Daniel C. Esty, professor of environmental law and policy, received the 2002 American Bar Association (ABA) Award for Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy during the ABA annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 12. Among his accomplishments, Esty lead a team in a pioneering approach to environmental decision making known as environmental performance measurement. This methodology is intended to furnish the data and analysis needed to make substantial improvements in environmental governance, thereby promoting environmental sustainability.

Rabbi Lina Grazier-Zerbarini has joined the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale as associate rabbi. In this role, she will provide rabbinic counseling, teach free-from-credit classes offered at Slifka Center throughout the academic year, lead Reform High Holiday services and assist in program advising to Yale Hillel student leaders. Grazier-Zerbarini was formerly director for domestic and rabbinic affairs and rabbinic consultant for the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Philadelphia.

Angelique F. Bordey, assistant professor at the School of Medicine, has been awarded a national research grant from the Epilepsy Foundation, a non-profit volunteer agency devoted to research, education, advocacy and services in the community for the 2.3 million Americans with seizure disorders and their families. Bordey will explore how an amino acid in the brain becomes elevated to better understand how seizures are caused.

The Society for the History of the Early Republic has named "Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic" by Joanne Freeman, assistant professor of history, as the best book in the field for 2001. The work, published by Yale University Press, offers a reassessment of political culture in the early years of the American republic.

Antonio L. Freitas, Ph.D. '02, received the 2001 Student Publication Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology for his article, "When to begin? Regulatory focus and initiating goal pursuit," co-authored with Nira Liberman, Peter Salovey, and E. Tory Higgins. The article was published in the January issue of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Charles H. Ahn, assistant professor of applied physics and physics, and Robert J. Schoelkopf, the Barton Weller Assistant Professor of Engineering, have been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering's eighth annual Frontiers of Engineering symposium. The three-day event, which will be held Sept. 19-21 at the National Academies' Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, California, will bring together 84 of the nation's top engineers, aged 30 to 45, who are performing leading-edge engineering research and technical work. The participants -- from industry, academia and government -- were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and were chosen from a field of nearly 150 applicants.

President Richard C. Levin has announced the appointment of the following faculty members: Andrew Hamilton, the Irénée duPont Professor of Chemistry, as chair of the the Department of Chemistry, for three years, beginning July 1; Dr. William H. Sledge, professor of psychiatry and master of Calhoun College, as chair of the Council of Masters for a one-year term, beginning July 1; and Stephen Stearns, the Edward P. Bass Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, as chair of the the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology for three years, beginning July 1.
