Levin lauds Princeton president for her response to Web violation
President Richard C. Levin has praised Princeton President Shirley Tilghman for her response to unauthorized access of Yale College's admissions web page by Princeton admissions officials.
"President Tilghman has handled a very difficult situation in an exemplary manner," Levin said. "When I informed her that Princeton officials had apparently used confidential student information to gain access to Yale's admissions web site, she immediately recognized the seriousness of the problem."
Yale learned over the summer that Princeton admissions personnel had accessed the admission status of a number of applicants to Yale College. The admission status was viewed online by using the Social Security numbers and birth dates of the applicants, who had also applied to Princeton.
After its own investigation, Princeton apologized for the unauthorized access, removed an associate dean of admissions from his position, and said it would discipline other admissions staff. Princeton acknowledged that the use of its applicants' Social Security numbers and birth dates to learn whether they had been admitted to Yale was improper.
"I am impressed by the thoroughness of Princeton's internal investigation and confident that all concerned now recognize the importance of protecting the privacy of college applicants," Levin said.
Princeton said that it also apologized to the Yale applicants whose admission status it had accessed without their knowledge.
Thousands of applicants to the Yale College Class of 2006 used the Yale website in April to learn if they had been admitted. Students also received notification from Yale by mail. The admissions web page included a warning that its confidential admission information was for the applicants' use only and that Yale would investigate any violation of its intended use. Yale plans to improve the website with additional security features to prevent unauthorized access.
