Noted Taliban expert and journalist will speak on campus
Ahmed Rashid, author of the bestselling book "Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia," will speak on campus on Monday, Sept. 23.
Rashid will be joined by M.J. Akbar, an Indian editor and author of "The Shades of Swords: Jihad and the Conflict Between Islam and Christianity."
The topic of their discussion, which is open to the public, is "Can the Kashmir Conflict Be Resolved: Two Perspectives from South Asia." Co-sponsored by the Poynter Fellowship and the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, this discussion will take place noon-1:30 p.m. in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.
As a journalist, Rashid has covered Afghanistan, Central Asia and Pakistan for more than 20 years, and his articles on the region have appeared in numerous publications. He has witnessed some of the most important moments in Afghan history, and since Sept. 11 has been one of the most sought-after experts on Afghanistan. He recently gave talks and briefings at the White House, the National Security Council, The Brookings Institution and the United Nations.
A book review of "Taliban" in The New York Times stated that "no book provides as much insight into the Taliban movement's rise and success....This is a must read for anyone wanting to understand America's new war." The book, which was a number-one New York Times bestseller, was published by the Yale University Press.
Rashid has recently published a new book, titled "Jihad: The Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia," which explores how the concept of jihad is misunderstood in the West and misused by militant Islamic groups in Central Asia.
