'Blue's Clues' director to speak on children and the media

Alice Wilder, the director of research and development for the children's television show "Blue's Clues," will visit the campus on Thursday, Sept. 26.

She will present a public lecture on "'Blue's Clues' for Preschoolers: Helping Children Confront Loss" from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Rm. 207 in Kirtland Hall, 2 Hillhouse Ave.

Wilder joined "Blue's Clues" in 1995 after working as a freelance research assistant for Children's Television Workshop and Nickelodeon.

In her role with the children's television program, she oversees the development of the "Blue's Clues" scripts. Her research involves testing scripts on the show's audience of preschoolers, parents, teachers and consultants. Each episode is centered around this research in an effort to ensure that pre-schoolers are provided with a creative, entertaining, learning experience.

Wilder also oversees ancillary businesses related to the show, including books, CD-ROMs, on-line offerings, a magazine, audio materials and consumer products.

Wilder has written numerous articles for educational and child psychology journals and has presented them at national conferences.

Universal preschool is focus of Bush Center lecture

Janet C. Hansen, vice president and director of education studies at the Committee for Economic Development (CED), will speak in the Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy lecture series on Friday, Sept. 27 at 11:30 a.m.

Her talk, titled "Universal Preschool: An Idea Whose Time is Coming," will take place in Rm. 211, Mason Laboratory, 9 Hillhouse Ave.

The talk is free and open to the public. For more information call (203) 432-9935.

Hansen oversees CED's education projects in early education, K-12 and post-secondary education. She also served as project director for CED's most recent policy statement on early education "Preschool for All: Investing in a Productive and Just Society."

Hansen previously served as a senior program office at the National Academy of Sciences. She was the director for policy analysis at the College Board and an academic administrator at Princeton University and at the Claremont Colleges.

She was recently nominated for an Emmy award by the National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences for "Outstanding Writing in a Children's Series."

While on campus, Wilder will also speak at a class titled "Psychology and Children and the Media."

Bioethics group explores ethics of computer-simulated people

Robin Hanson, assistant professor of economics at George Mason University, will visit Yale on Wednesday, September 25 to discuss "The Economics and Ethics of Computer-Simulated People."

The lecture, which is open to members of the Yale community, will take place at 4:15 p.m. at ISPS and is part of a monthly speaker series on "Ethics, Technology and Utopian Visions," presented by the Yale Interdisciplinary Bioethics Program and
its working research group on "Artificial Intelligence, Nanotechnology and Transhumanism."

In his talk, Hanson will present a futuristic scenario in which a technology has been developed which allows the human brain to be scanned into a computer. His discussion will focus on the economic and social implications of this technology. Hanson believes that if this becomes a reality, computer-simulated people could become direct substitues for most human labor. He will also consider how, although this technology may be beneficial to economic growth, there are serious ethical issues that need to be considered.
