SOM Dean to kick off campus United Way campaign

X
Jeffrey Garten, dean of the Yale School of Management (SOM), will kick off Yale's 2002 United Way Campaign on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. at Donaldson Commons, 140 Prospect St.

At the event, Garten will discuss his newest book, "The Politics of Fortune: A New Agenda for Business Leaders," in which he calls for a new kind of business leadership in the United States and worldwide. Following his talk, there will be a wine and cheese reception, and Garten will sign copies of his book.

The event is free and open to the Yale community; however, registration is required. For information and to register, visit the website at http://felix.med.yale.edu/lcdb/courses/classinfo.asp?CourseID=476.

Before coming to Yale SOM, Garten was undersecretary of commerce for international trade 1993-1995. He spent 13 years on Wall Street, specializing in debt restructuring in Latin America for Lehman Brothers, building the firm's investment banking business in Asia, restructuring some of the world's largest shipping companies in Hong Kong and working on mergers and acquisitions business for The Blackstone Group.

He writes a monthly column for Business Week on major challenges facing global business leaders and serves on the board of directors of Aetna, Calpine Energy Corporation and Credit Suisse Asset Management. His other books include "The Mind of the CEO," "World View: Global Strategies for the New Economy," and "The Big Ten: Big Emerging Markets and How They Will Change Our Lives."

"In Yale's Tercentennial year, we raised $400,000 for Yale's neighbors in Greater New Haven," says Laura Freebairn-Smith, chair of the University's United Way campaign and director of the Organizational Development and Learning Center. "The Yale United Way campaign is one way to continue our long tradition of community service."

"Your donation to the United Way can change the lives of children, the elderly, and other needy citizens in Greater New Haven through the simple process of payroll deduction. This is an easy and effortless way to participate in improving our community. You can be a part of
New Haven's compassionate and caring community."

Programs funded by the United Way of Greater New Haven combat adolescent drug abuse, provide quality child care and other services for low-income families; support affordable-housing problems; and more.
