Library appoints four new senior department heads

The Yale Library begins this fall with four senior department heads in place in the Arts Library, the East Asian Collection, the Social Science Libraries and Information Services (SSLIS) and the Preservation Department.

They are: Katherine Haskins, who assumed the directorship of the Yale Arts Library in mid-June; Ellen Hammond, who took up her post as head of the East Asian Library on June 10; long-time staff member Sandra Peterson, who was appointed to lead SSLIS; and Roberta Pilette, who came to Yale this September to direct the University Library's Preservation Department.

Katherine Haskins was previously head of the University of Chicago's Reference and Information Services and head of its Dissertation Office. She has experience as a bibliographer for art, film, theater and classical archaeology, as well as electronic resources and reference and library instruction services.

Ellen Hammond comes to the East Asian Library from the University of Iowa, where she was Japanese studies librarian and adjunct associate professor. She previously worked at the Morgan Stanley Japan Ltd. Library and the United Nations University Library, both in Tokyo.

Sandra Peterson, who has served at the Yale Library for over 18 years, is an established expert in government documents. Prior to her time at Yale, she worked in libraries of the College of William and Mary, University of Northern Iowa, Oberlin College and the West Virginia State Library.

Roberta Pilette most recently was the acting Aaron and Clara Greenhut Rabinowitz Chief Librarian for Preservation at the New York Public Library. She is a seasoned conservator, with experience at Columbia University, the New York Historical Society and her own private conservation practice in New York City Memorial Library.
