Corporation names new senior fellow
Pepper, a 1960 graduate of Yale College, has been a successor trustee on the Corporation since 1995. Pepper joined Procter & Gamble in 1963 following three years in the U.S. Navy. He was appointed general manager of Procter & Gamble Italia in 1974 and group vice president for European operations in 1981. In 1984, Pepper was elected to the company's board of directors and in 1986 became company president. He was named chair and chief executive officer in 1995. Pepper has been an active volunteer leader. He is a member of the executive committee of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and co-chair of its Development Campaign. First proposed in 1994, the center is scheduled to open in 2004 on the bank of the Ohio River in Cincinnati as the centerpiece of a $2 billion riverfront development initiative. Its purpose will be to re-count the American story of freedom from slavery and oppression using a variety of programs, exhibits and performances. It will celebrate the values of courage, cooperation, perseverance and freedom that define the saga of the Underground Railroad in order to inspire visitors and to stimulate dialogue on how individuals can live together in accord today. The center became a member of the affiliate program of the Smithsonian Institution in 2000. In the corporate community, Pepper is a director of the Xerox Corporation and Motorola, Inc., and is a member and former chair of the U.S. Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and the Ohio Business Roundtable. Pepper was a founder and serves on the executive committee of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative and on the boards of Partnership for a Drug Free America and The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Pepper holds honorary degrees from several institutions including the University of St. Petersburg in Russia. Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Pepper lives in Cincinnati with his wife, Francie. They have four children: John, David '92, '99 J.D., Douglas and Susan '99.
