Wood-turning demonstration to feature Stoney Lamar

Wood turner Stoney Lamar will demonstrate his art and talk about works in the exhibition "Wood Turning in North America Since 1930" at the Yale University Art Gallery on Saturday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m.-noon and 1:30-4:30 p.m.

The program is free and open to the public.

Lamar, who lives and works in Saluda, North Carolina, is represented in leading public collections throughout the country, including the American Craft Museum in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Lamar and his wife started a woodworking shop in Saluda, North Carolina, in the 1980s. He had planned to design and build furniture, but after borrowing a friend's lathe, he found the spontaneity of sculptured wood turning more satisfying.

He attended summer workshops with Mark and Melvin Lindquist and David Ellsworth which profoundly affected his approach to turning. In 1984 he began a one year assistant's position in the Lindquists' New Hampshire studio.

Lamar has lectured and conducted workshops in wood turning. He was a founding member of the American Association of Woodturners and has served on the board of directors and as president of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild.

Nestlé CEO will visit as Gordon Grand Fellow

Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, chief executive officer of Nestlé S.A., will visit the campus on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8 and 9, as a Gordon Grand Fellow and will also speak at the Yale School of Management (SOM) Leaders Forum.

On Tuesday, the Gordon Grand Fellowship at Yale will sponsor a master's tea with Brabeck-Letmathe at 4 p.m. in Saybrook College, 90 High St. His talk will focus on "Branding in a Global Society." The tea is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Brabeck-Letmathe's SOM talk will take place 11:45 a.m.-12:50 p.m. in Horchow Hall, 55 Hillhouse Ave. The talk is also free and open to the public.

Brabeck-Letmathe joined Nestlé in 1968, beginning his career as a salesman and later becoming a specialist for new products. Helped by his linguistic skills -- he is fluent in four languages -- his career with the company has included a wide variety of assignments in several countries as well as Nestlé's international headquarters in Switzerland.

His international career included a span of almost 10 years in Chile (1970-1980) serving first as national sales manager and later as director of marketing. In 1981, he was appointed managing director of Nestlé Ecuador, and in 1983, he became president and managing director of Nestlé Venezuela. He became vice president in charge of the Culinary Products Division in Switzerland in 1987.

In 1992 he was appointed executive vice president of the company, with worldwide responsibility for marketing, communications and public affairs. During his time in this position, he put into place the unique branding policy of Nestlé, characterized by a strict hierarchy of strategic brands on the global, regional and local level.

In 1997, Brabeck-Letmathe was elected to the board of directors and on the same day was appointed chief executive officer. In 2001, he became vice-chair of the board.

Brabeck-Letmathe also sits on the boards of numerous international corporations.

The Gordon Grand Fellowship at Yale promotes dialogue and understanding between today's business leaders and students at Yale. The fellowship was established in 1973 to honor Gordon Grand, a graduate of the Yale College Class of 1938, and president and chief executive officer of the Olin Corporation. During his lifetime, Grand endeavored to bridge the gap between business and academia by actively promoting the exchange of ideas and viewpoints between these sectors. Today, the Gordon Grand Fellowship continues this tradition by inviting prominent business leaders to Yale for one- to three-day visits.
