Eyeglass drive

Unite For Sight, a nonprofit organization, is holding an ongoing "Donate Your Eyes" eyeglass drive.

Members of the University and Connecticut communities are encouraged to donate used prescription eyeglasses or non prescription UV-protected sunglasses, which will be sent to eye clinics in developing countries for patients who cannot afford to purchase glasses. Collection bins are located in Sterling Memorial Library and the Yale Cushing/Whitney Medical Library.

Unite for Sight is dedicated to preventing blindness locally and internationally through free community vision screenings, public education about eye disease and the importance of regular eye exams to prevent blindness, a speaker series and an eyeglass drive. Additionally, Unite for Sight is committed to supporting those community members with deteriorating vision through community assistance.

Bone marrow drive

Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center are teaming up with the New England Marrow Donor Program for a series of stem cell/bone marrow testing drives during November.

Patients with leukemia whose disease cannot be controlled by medicine and related treatments depend for survival on a stem cell transplant. Those who cannot find a suitable match amongst their siblings depend on the National Marrow Donor Program. According to the organizers of the drives, more diversity is needed on the National Registry. Donors of African American, Hispanic and American Indian descent are strongly urged to participate.

Donors attending the drives will be asked to watch a short video explaining the procedure. They will complete a consent form and have a small sample of blood taken from their finger, which will enter them into the National Registry.

Testing drives will be at the following dates and locations:

* Nov. 14, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. -- Harkness Ballroom, Yale School of Medicine;

* Nov. 15, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. -- Grace Building, Yale-New Haven Hospital;
