Internal Medicine to host reunion of residents, fellows

The achievements of housestaff (medical residents) and fellows in the School of Medicine's Department of Internal Medicine will be celebrated during the first alumni gathering of residents and fellows sponsored by the School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH).

Both current and former housestaff and fellows will join together for the The Internal Medicine Housestaff & Fellows First Alumni Reunion, which will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26 in New Haven.

"A housestaff reunion is a cause for celebration at any time, but at the present time this event is long overdue," says Dr. Ralph Horwitz, the Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology and Public Health and chair of internal medicine, who is also chief of the Beeson Medical Service at Y-NNH.

"Not only will this reunion give us a chance to renew old friendships and make new ones, but we hope our alumni can spread the news of our accomplishments and help us make prudent choices for the future."

The reunion will blend academic and social activities. Highlights include a keynote address by Dr. Samuel O. Thier, former chair and chief of internal medicine at Yale, and a performance by Anna Deavere Smith, a professor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, who will present "Rounding It Out," in which she portrays various aspects of life for physicians and patients at Y-NHH. Other events include a Quiz Bowl, an afternoon tailgate at the Yale Bowl prior to a football game between Yale and the University of Pennsylvania on Oct. 26 and a dinner dance.

"The Internal Medicine residency training program and the subspecialty fellowships have brought forth friendships, collaborations and traditions," says Dr. Rosemarie Fisher, director of graduate medical education at Y-NHH. "This reunion offers the first opportunity for those relationships to be renewed or revisited. The tradition of family in these training programs deserves to be revisited and will be, along with some friendly competition at the Quiz Bowl. We all look forward to the opportunity to rekindle these relationships between each other and with the institution."

For information about the reunion or to register, call Lynn Gambardella at (203) 785-2477 or visit the website www.info.med.yale.edu/intmed/alum and register online.
