International Festival of Arts & Ideas

Musicians, performance and visual artists, puppeteers, acrobats and dancers from around the world will entertain some 100,000 visitors to this year's International Festival of Arts & Ideas, which is held at various sites on the campus and in New Haven.

Yale is one of the sponsors of the annual event.

Highlights of the festival include:

* musical performances by the vocal ensemble Manhattan Transfer; Grammy Award-winning singer Roberta Flack; acclaimed violinist Regina Carter and guitarist John McLaughlin (the latter two concerts will be held on the Yale campus);

* the Royal Shakespeare Company's performances of Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida" and Brian Friel's "A Month in the Country";

* "Heart of the Matter," a range of interactive programs for children linking art and science;

* A Children's Stage featuring a variety of performances and activities for younger audiences;

* an exploration of the themes of war and peace, including the Yale exhibits on World War I (see listing for the Yale Center for British Art [BAC], page 2A); a reading by BAC director Patrick McCaughey of poetry inspired by the war; a three-day conference exploring issues of war and peace at the Yale University Art Gallery; and a series of Þlms about war -- including "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Gallipoli" -- at the BAC.

Members of the Yale faculty will present studio classes and give a number of talks as part of the festival. Among the Yale afÞliates giving talks are Penelope Laurans, Richard H. Brodhead, W. Richard Lytle, Steven Sheehan, Murray Biggs and Donald Faulkner. Individual talks will begin by psychologist Robert Sternberg (on relationships and love) and by Harold Bloom (a discussion of "Troilus and Cressida." The International Festival of Arts & Ideas also celebrates the talents and cultures of local residents in its "Downtown" and "The Edge" festival offerings, among others.

Shakespeare in the Park
Edgerton Park, corner of Whitney Avenue and Cliff Street
Dates: Aug. 18­22, Aug. 25­29, Sept. 1­5

The University is also a supporter of the Elm Shakespeare Company's production of the bard's "Henry IV, Part I" during three weeks this summer at Edgerton Park.

The Elm Shakespeare Company is a professional theater company committed to establishing a discourse with Connecticut's communities and schools through the medium of Shakespeare's plays. This is the fourth year that the company will perform a Shakespearean drama at Edgerton Park. Approximately 30,000 people are expected to attend the performances.


Jazz on the Green
New Haven Green
Dates: Saturday evenings July 31­Aug. 28
Time: Opening acts begin at 6 p.m.

Yale University is a cosponsor of the SNET New Haven Jazz Festival, a series of performances taking place on the New Haven Green on Saturday evenings in July and August. Concert-goers can purchase food at booths set up along the Green or can bring their own picnic dinners.

The schedule follows.

July 31 -- Celia Cruz and her 12-piece salsa ensemble

Aug. 7 -- saxophonist Sonny Rollins (Yale is the main sponsor of this concert)

Aug. 14 -- jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck and his quartet

Aug. 21 -- the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Duke Ellington's grandson Paul Mercer Ellington)

Aug. 28 -- Roomful of Blues


"Celebrate New Haven 4th"
Long Wharf Park
Date: July 4

Yale is a cosponsor of this July 4 festival at Long Wharf Park along the New Haven Harbor. This year's day-long celebration will include children's activities, a concert by Orchestra New England, tours of a naval ship, food vendors and a giant Þreworks display after dark.
