International Festival of Arts & Ideas

Date: June 14-30

Admission is free to many events; some require tickets

Info.: www.artidea.org or 1-888-ART-IDEA

One of the largest celebrations of art and culture in the United States, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas features performers from around the world as well as local talent. The 17-day festival's offerings include music, dance, drama, storytelling, puppet shows, poetry readings, lectures and more. Hundreds of thousands of spectators attend festival events at New Haven venues, on the Yale campus and several other local sites.

This year's event will explore the theme "Art and Conflict" through a series of conversations, performances and other activities that explore how artists from around the world have confronted and responded to conflict in their native countries.

Some highlights of this year's festival are a concert performance of Puccini's opera "Tosca" by the Metropolitan Opera; a coproduction of Carol Goldoni's 18th-century farce "A Servant to Two Masters" by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Young Vic; an Abbey Theatre production of Brian Friel's love story "Translations"; music performances by the Wycliffe Gordon Quintet and Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto; and aerial choreography by the Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company. "The 1901 Project" will explore the global roots of New Haven citizens as well as Yale's links with New Haven, America and the world in 1901.

More information on festival events will appear in a future issue of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.
