Norfolk Chamber Music Festival

Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate, Norfolk, CT (on Rte. 272, just south of Rte. 44)
Dates: June 25-Aug. 26
Performances: Main events at 8 p.m.; Young Artist Recitals are offered Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.
Tickets: $10-$36; $5 for young adults ages 18-25; free for children under age 18. (Members of the Yale community receive 50% off full-price tickets.) Admission to Young Artist Recitals is by donation.

More than 30 concerts and recitals will be offered at the picturesque Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate during the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music's 60th season.

Special events this summer include "Bach 2K," a full weekend devoted to Bach's music, which will feature a performance by the Tokyo String Quartet of all the Brandenburg Concerti; a celebration of Aaron Copland's 100th birthday with guest performer Richard Lalli; "A Night at the Movies," combining silent FIlms and chamber music; and "Norfolk Ballroom," meant to inspire concertgoers to kick up their heels in dance.

In addition, the Nexus Percussion Ensemble and pianist Gilbert Kalish will make their Norfolk debut and the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and Vermeer Quartet will return. Other featured musicians are Claude Frank, David Krakauer, Frank Morelli, Charles Neidich, John O'Conor and Carol Wincenc. For children and families, the group eighth blackbird has designed a "Beauties & Blackbirds" program that combines music, art and poetry.

Concertgoers are invited to come early and picnic or stroll the grounds of the 70-acre Stoeckel Estate.

Concert-goers are invited to bring a picnic dinner and lawn chairs or blankets to hear guest artists from North America and Europe play the 54-bell carillon in Harkness Tower. In case of rain, an indoor listening space will be provided in Phelps Hall.

Yale Summer Chorus

The Yale Summer Chorus is open to all members of the University community without audition.

Sponsored by the Yale Glee Club, it will be directed by Ellen Espenchied '97, MUS '99. The chorus will perform in a concert on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. The program will feature Haydn's "Lord Nelson" Mass and Benjamin Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb."

The chorus' FIrst rehearsal is Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. in Rm. 201 of Hendrie Hall, 165 Elm St. Rehearsals will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m., until the concert.
