International Festival of Arts & Ideas
Date: June 16-July 1
Yale is a major sponsor of The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, one of the largest international festivals in the United States. A wide range of performers -- from musicians to puppeteers to dancers -- are featured in several hundred festival events. This year, the 16-day festival will take place in three cities: New Haven, Stamford and New London.
Among the events taking place on the Yale campus this year are a conference on the Bloomsbury Group, performances by the Bill Apollo Brown Trio, the Four Nations Ensemble, Cape Verdean blues and jazz singer Cesaria Evora and Argentinian pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler; a musical and spoken-word dramatization of a slave narrative by Craig Harris and Sekou Sundiata; and a film festival at the Yale Center for British Art . In addition, Yale will be the site for a day-long seminar titled "Reflection & Vision: The Future Isn't What it Used to Be," which will explore the place of the humanities in today's world.
Other festival highlights include a production of "Macbeth" by the Royal Shakespeare Company; a musical performed by the Saigon Water Puppet Theatre; a concert featuring the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, led by Grammy-winning musician Wynton Marsalis; a performance by soloists from the Royal Swedish Ballet and the José Limón Dance Company; and a performance of "HMS Pinafore" by the D'Oly Carte Opera Company. The festival will celebrate Long Island Sound with sailing trips and a day of entertainment and events in Stamford centered around a visit by six historic "tall ships."
The festival will also feature talks on such topics as human stem cell research, global warming, public policy and the arts, children and the media, political polling, Internet democracy, Medicare and youth safety. Yale faculty members are among the participants in some of these talks.
The talents and cultures of local residents are also celebrated in the festival. Further information on festival events will appear in a future issue of this newspaper.
