Well-known authors will read from and discuss their works during the annual Summer Lecture Series, which is sponsored by Yale Summer Programs. For the 19th year, the series will begin with a lecture and film about Sherlock Holmes.

The lectures are held on Thursday evenings. Those scheduled at press time follow. All are free and open to the public. Further information about the series will be available in futures issues of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

June 22 -- The annual Sherlock Holmes Lecture, "Is Sherlock Holmes Emotionally Intelligent?" will be presented by Peter Salovey, professor of psychology. There will also be a screening of the film "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (1942). Dr. David Musto, professor of child psychiatry and of the history of medicine and psychiatry, will moderate the event. This event is also listed as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas (see page 3A).

July 21 -- Poet, short story writer and novelist Alice Mattison will read from her work. Mattison is the author of a book of poems, three collections of short stories and three novels. Her most recent novel is "The Book Borrower," published in 1999.

Aug. 3 -- Tom Perrotta will read from his work and discuss the differing disciplines of screenwriting and writing. Perrotta is the author of the short story collection "Bad Haircut," and the novels "The Election" and "The Wishbones." His new novel, "Joe College," will be published in the fall, and he is currently working on an original screenplay.

Aug. 11 -- Poet and novelist April Barnard will read from her work.
