The Payne Whitney Gymnasium will offer eight-week courses in physical education this summer. There will be adult classes for gym members in aerobic exercise, yoga, shotokan karate and other martial arts. Also available during the summer months is private swim instruction (by appointment only) for adults and children age 4 and up.

Classes begin Monday, June 5, and will conclude the week of July 24. Exercise classes are "open enrollment" sessions that can be joined at any time during the summer. A complete summer schedule of classes, including registration fees and details, can be obtained in the lobby of the gym or by calling (203) 432-1431.

The gym, completed in 1932 and currently undergoing major renovations and alterations, is one of the most elaborate indoor athletic facilities in the world. Aside from the mechanical and code upgrades, the most recently completed phase of the construction project is the air-conditioned Brady Squash Center, home to Yale's men's and women's squash teams. The Brady Center, located in the east wing of the fourth floor, boasts the only four-walled glass exhibition court in the world. The center also features 14 other international courts.

Another recently completed area of the gym is the air-conditioned Colonel Lanman Center, a 30,000-square-foot addition for basketball, volleyball and other sports activities with a suspended three-lane 1/8 of a mile Mondo® indoor jogging track. The Adrian C. "Ace" Israel Fitness Center is located in the west wing of the fourth floor. This premier, air-conditioned facility features 72 pieces of state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment, two Cybex ® pin selector weight training circuits and abundant free weights.

The nine-and-one-half story gym also houses two pools -- a 50-meter practice pool on the third floor and the 25-meter Robert Kiphuth Exhibition Pool in the basement; indoor jogging tracks; separate men's and women's sauna complexes; a gymnastics studio; a fencing salon, gymnasia for aerobics, dance, volleyball, basketball and martial arts; a pony polo practice room; and locker rooms for men and women.

Graduate and undergraduate students may use the gym for a nominal fee during the summer term. Summer memberships at reasonable rates are available for faculty, employees and student spouses.


Tennis Center

Derby Avenue

The Yale Tennis Center includes 22 Deco Turf II (hard) courts, 5 clay courts; and, in case of rain, 4 indoor courts. Group and private lessons are offered by certified professionals, and there are summer tennis campus for children. Court rentals for members of the Yale and New Haven communities from July through September are on a first-come basis. Full-time Yale students play for free. Contact the court attendant on site after May for more details.


Yacht Club

Adults and children who would like to learn sailing and windsurfing can do so at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club (YCYC), located at Short Beach in Branford.

The club offers adult memberships for recreational and competitive sailing during the summer and school year. In the summer, sailing and windsurfing lessons are taught to adults and children (from beginner to advanced).


Golf Course

The Yale Golf Course is open to students, faculty, staff and their families and guests.

The course includes a driving range and a clubhouse featuring a pro shop and grill room. Also available are a variety of instructional programs for an extra fee.

Annual memberships -- for both individuals and families -- are offered to students, faculty (full-time, part-time, visiting and clinical), staff, alumni and fellows. Daily green fees require a valid Yale I.D. and are $18-$50 depending on Yale affiliation.


Polo and Equestrian Center

Riding and polo lessons, competitive polo and other equestrian-related activities are available at the Polo and Equestrian Center. Polo matches are held on weekends throughout the summer.

The center contains 62 stalls, indoor and outdoor arenas, and outdoor riding facilities and trails. Summer riding programs for children ages 5-8 are offered in one-week sessions, and one-week and two-week sessions for children ages 9-16 are offered during June, July and August.


Yale Outdoor Education Center

Located on 2,000 woodland acres on the shore of a mile-long lake is the Yale Outdoor Education Center (OEC), a recreational complex in East Lyme.

Swimming, boating, camping and picnicking are offered at the center, which is open daily to all Yale affiliates and their families from the third week in June through Labor Day weekend.

Members can rent lakeside cabins and woodland campsites. Rowboats and canoes are also available. Lifeguards and instructors are on duty daily 10 a.m.-noon and
1-5 p.m. (5:30 p.m. on weekends). The facility contains a dining hall with a large deck, pavilion, shower house, picnic groves with tables and grills, a grass and sand beach, hiking trail, wildlife conservation marsh, duck pond, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, playing field and more.

Season memberships may be purchased 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the OEC office, Rm. 511 of the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy.


Summer Sports Camps

Children can sharpen their athletic skills in a variety of summer sports camps. Day camps are offered in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis and field hockey, and there are multi-sports camps for younger children.

All specialty camps are concentrated for rapid improvement. The camps present many diverse sports activities with an emphasis on fundamentals. A weekly bus trip to Yale's Outdoor Recreation Center in East Lyme features swimming, boating, canoeing, fishing and other activities.
